NKC Hospital partners with Children's Mercy Hospital
NORTH KANSAS CITY HOSPITAL AND CHILDREN’S MERCY JOIN TO ENHANCE
NEONATAL SERVICES IN THE NORTHLAND

A partnership between North Kansas City Hospital and Children’s Mercy Hospital will allow more seriously ill babies and their parents to remain closer to home when babies require an advanced level of care at birth. Children’s Mercy will provide 24/7 neonatal nurse practitioner coverage for North Kansas City Hospital’s nursery beginning Nov. 1. Neonatal nurse practitioners have advanced training caring for sick newborns and will complement the care now provided by the hospital’s certified neonatal intensive care registered nurses.
“With this change, we can offer parents an enhanced level of care when their newborn has special health needs. We’ll be able to keep more babies in our Level II special care nursery, yet still have our partnership with Children’s Mercy Level III services for those babies who need it,” says Michele Malone, Director of Women’s Services at North Kansas City Hospital.
Malone explains the new partnership is part of North Kansas City Hospital’s new Center of Excellence for Women’s Services that will be fully implemented over the next 24 to 36 months.
The North Kansas City Hospital nursery will remain at a Level II designation but will expand from 10 beds to 18 beds, upgrade to all private rooms and relocate to the hospital’s 8th floor in 2008. Enhancing the capabilities of the nursery is part of a more than $10 million project to remodel and renovate two floors that provide maternity services.
