The Kansas City Regional Association of Diabetes Educators (KCRADE) received the national award for 2009 Chapter of the Year. It was awarded in Atlanta at the annual meeting of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. This national group guides the professional of diabetes educators to promote healthy living and self management for all people with diabetes and related conditions. KCRADE was created more than 20 years ago.
National membership includes nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, physicians and any others who have an interest in diabetes care. There are more than 12,000 individual members nationally, and more than 100 chapters.
To qualify for consideration for this presitgious honor, the local organization submitted evidence that members displayed certain characteristics. These characteristics included running an efficient chapter, providing networking and job opportunities for members as well as offering continuing education.
Local members of NKCH include: Mary Beth Fisher, RN, Melissa Zalonis, RN, Pat McAllister, RD, and Vickie Diesel, RD. Collectively, all chapter members have a strong relationship with their community by organizing and supporting educational programs throughout the city including neighborhoods of high risk populations. They also act as legislative advocates for those who have diabetes.
