Hospice House Progresses in the Northland
In Fall 2008, NorthCare Hospice officially announced plans to raise funds to open the Northland’s first hospice house. Today’s difficult economy is causing many not-for-profit organizations to reevaluate their capital campaigns, including NorthCare.

The original plan was to locate the hospice house in Health Center North, on the north side of the Hospital campus, and for NorthCare to raise $7.5 million dollars for renovations and start up costs. Like other not-for-profits, NorthCare has experienced challenges in raising donations as quickly as projected when the campaign began.

This week NorthCare is announcing a new initiative to move forward without delay in the creation of a hospice house while using existing resources. Newly vacated space on 2 East will be renovated to provide a 16-bed homelike hospice house. When the original plan was announced in the fall, this wing was in use. Now this area is a viable option for the project and at a significantly reduced cost.

A separate outside entrance will be constructed on the 2 East wing to accommodate families and visitors to the area. The design will consist of a spiritual center, family kitchen, seating areas plus much more. It’s projected the initial renovation will cost approximately $1 million. North Kansas City Hospital is funding these renovations, and NorthCare will lease the renovated space from the Hospital. NorthCare is affiliated with North Kansas City Hospital.

Community support is still needed for NorthCare to raise funds for initial set-up/operating costs, charitable care, an endowment and special projects within the facility.

NorthCare Hospice & Palliative Care exists to offer excellence in care, comfort and support to those experiencing life-limiting illness so they may embrace life until death with dignity.

We believe this new plan is a great alternative to expand the availability of hospice care and meet the needs of hospice patients and families in our community.
