This 1-session class briefly covers the topics included in the 2-week Beyond Birth series, but without as much depth. CLASS 1-Tips for New Parents-1/2 of this class is devoted to discussion about the immediate postpartum period and the family; care of the mother, suggestions for coping during the first few weeks at home and when to call the health care provider will be emphasized. The other 1/2 of the class is a celebration of the amazing newborn, with a focus toward introducing parents to appearance, behavior, bathing, diapering, dressing, comforting, feeding and safety issues.
CLASS 2-Breastfeeding Basics-is designed to help manage breastfeeding for the first few weeks at home. An overview and information about benefits of breastfeeding are discussed. North Kansas City Hospital is an official Medela pump station and a North Kansas City Hospital lactation consultant can answer your questions and provide information about pump rental/sales and breastfeeding supplies. CLASS 1-INTRODUCTION OF LABOR-includes hospital admission policies, relaxation and comfort measures for the 3rd trimester and early labor and the mechanics of the labor and birth process. CLASS 2-COPING WITH LABOR-topics include non-medicinal techniques for comfort, as well as medications and epidural analgesia/anesthesia. The labor support person's role is emphasized. CLASS 3- Focuses on CHALLENGING LABORS AND CESAREAN BIRTH; more comfort techniques are introduced and those with planned cesarean births will have a guided tour of the maternity units. CLASS 4-deals with ASSISTED LABOR AND BIRTH and provides information about induction and augmentation of labor, eipsiotomy, forceps and vacuum assisted birth. Comfort during late labor and active pushing techniques are demonstrated. A guided tour of the maternity units is included. Registration is required. We recommend that you COMPLETE this class by the time you are at 37 weeks gestation.
